BACK TO THE PAST

Abroad, easy smile creased Declan’s craggy features. He felt like a young man again, because the last time he had done what he was doing now he had been just that.

It had been more than three decades since Declan had stood at the helm of a skiff and sailed it through a choppy sea. Such a long time ago.

So much had happened since then.

So much had changed.

Declan wasn’t the same person now as he had been then. That was to be expected, wasn’t it? That was how life worked.

Much like the Great Sharks that hunted in the channel between the Isle of Mist and the Highlands, you needed to keep moving to stay alive.

Declan certainly had. He hadn’t had any other choice, the events that had pushed him to where he was now thrust upon him against his will.

Still, he couldn’t complain. He wouldn’t have picked all that had occurred to him since he last stood at the tiller of a frigate, the wheel in his hand. Yet there was little that he would change.

All that had happened to him had made him who he was. Had given him the people he cared about.

He liked who he was. He loved the people who were a part of his life. He would do anything for them.

He didn’t have time for that, and he didn’t like to waste his energy on what could have been.

He preferred to focus on what was and what could be.

Nevertheless, thinking back for just a few heartbeats, those had been good days. Easier days. Freer days.

Softer days as well. Because life hadn’t punched him in the gut yet. Time and time again.

Declan pushed his memories to the side. He didn’t want to waste his time thinking about what had been. He was having too much fun with the warm sun beating down on him and the ship under his control gliding through the water with the grace of a dolphin.

Captain Gregson had disengaged the two smaller frigates that were attached to the Freedom during the journey across the Burnt Ocean. For the next few minutes, Declan would continue to captain the Adventurer with the help of six members of the Freedom’s crew.

The Explorer was anchored in a small bay on the leeward side of the Isle of Mist, one of its masts being refitted.

At first, the sailor who was supposed to serve as the helmsman had been worried when Declan had asked to take the wheel once they were away from the Isle of Mist and sailing south along the coast.

After a long conversation and then watching Declan at the
